I ask this because yesterday I was reading ‘Royal Assassin’ by Robin Hobb, and came across the word “susurrus” - I’d never, ever heard of this word before and found it beautiful. Coincidentally, I’m also reading ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ at the moment, and today I was happily reading along and lo and behold… I encountered the word “susurration”.
I don’t know if I just missed the boat on this word, but I found it so fun that I’d never seen it before, (despite having been an avid reader for most of my 29 years) only to see it twice in less than 24 hours.
I love little coincidences like this, and this has shot to the top of my list of favourite words (which I keep track of in my Notes app like a lil’ nerd).
Do you have a favourite word that you discovered through literature? Where did you come across it for the first time?
