Agreed, and I went to tidal basin ~ a dozen times on a season pass last year. All cities have a tree.

Cherry blossoms are the "you had to be there" of spring blooms. They're beautiful, if only for a moment. Give it a week or two and they'll be a dull green with no more flower petals.

The Tidal Basin area is already a major tourist draw in and of itself even without the blossoms. Add in the trees - of which there are thousands - and it’s a no brainer. No one is suggesting they’re unique to DC, it’s simply the backdrop and volume of blooms.

It wasn’t just the cars/drivers that were insane. Cyclists were just going whenever and wherever they pleased without checking blind spots or anything. Pedestrians, I’m guessing mostly out of towners, were just hopping into the middle of major streets to get that perfect pic. Crosswalks? What are those? Apparently the cherry blossom admirers believed they all had mutant-like force field powers today. Either that or they just didn’t give a single fuck about their lives or the lives of the drivers they’d ruin all to get a picture of some goddamned trees blooming.
(Edit: Sorry for the rant; my blood boiled at several points today while driving and while walking my dog).

It's a slippery slope though.
Once someone parks outside zone hours and gets a ticket, they are one step closer to disregard for the law necessary to stab a metro passenger.

Besides the hype, I feel like no other city has created an identity around cherry blossoms like DC has. All our sports teams have cherry blossom jerseys. Our metro cards and trains have cherry blossom designs. You'd think cherry blossoms were native to D.C but they're literally found in almost every other American city. I really don't understand it. There's much more culture and truly interesting things unique to D.C that I would think people would find much more interesting.

As someone who lived there for a good time, most people I knew viewed themselves as an extension of Tenleytown or Chevy Chase rather than Van Ness

Look, you’re not going to get shanked on the Orange line between Vienna and Smithsonian on Sunday at 10 am.

Not today, maybe Saturday? From my perspective, Metro was on point. Rush hour schedule all day, good signage and guidance from staff for the tourists. The only snag was getting back into the metro station with a small wait when the platforms were too packed with people leaving, but Metro moved the huge crowds really efficiently today.

I wouldn’t think literally parking on 66 or 395 would get you any closer either though.

"Trains run on time and address crime" sounds fascist to me.
>Mussolini may have done many brutal and tyrannical things; he may have destroyed human freedom in Italy; he may have murdered and tortured citizens whose only crime was to oppose Mussolini; but 'one had to admit' one thing about the Dictator: he 'made the trains run on time.'
Just a dash of jest in what I am expressing

Nope. A ten minutes drive from downtown DC to DCA took a hour and fifteen minutes today around 1pm. Because people were literally parking on the bridge on 395S.

It’s like they have and they know it’s unreliable and unsafe and they choose to use their personal vehicles.
