It was due to the kite flying and taiko performances going on near the Washington Monument. It didn’t help that I went at peak time, and there were so many people on the train that it was creaking badly when it stopped.

To be fair, it's a fairly long walk from any of the metro stops to the tidal basin. I took the bus from the metro and that was also a terrible idea because of how bad traffic was. I ended up waking back.

I drove in from central PA today. Woke up at 4 arrived at 6. Was able to park at the mall. I can’t imagine the thought process of thinking you’ll beat the crowds any later than 6:30am, hard to imagine going in the middle of the day.

I used to commute to dc from brunswick on the marc when my hours allowed it, and absolutely loved it. I would slee the entire ride down in the morning, and usually read on the ride home. I moved here in 2014 and now commute via bicycle, and there are times when I miss being able to relax and not think about being killed while getting to work

Silver was crowded but not delayed for us. Guess some lines were worse!

Metro was def not normal on the orange line. It took two hours from West Falls Church to Smithsonian. It was only supposed to be a 40 min ride. 🙃

It runs over 20/day on the weekdays and about a dozen times on Sat and Sunday. So it could be more but not bad. And it was packed today. Ridership could be better but I think it's more than ppl realize.

I take the Marc 1/month to visit my sister near Baltimore. It's fantastic. Why anyone would drive to Baltimore and deal with BWI Parkway or 95 I'll never understand.

But still. Lile the insane backup alllll the waybaround Hains Point is something Ive never seen seen anything close to and Ive been here for decades, come out a dozen plus times to the cherry blossoms. This shit was something else today and I really want to know why. It was super crowded last year but like normal tons of walkers around tidal basin and way quieter on Hains Point but it was batshit today.

People will do anything to not take the metro.

That’s good to know. But no on Smithsonian. his train was full when he got on at DCA and there were delays at every stop because people were trying to get on a full train. Sounds like an exception not the rule for the day.

Something tells me they tried to use Smithsonian.
Edit: I happened to make several trips on Blue between Eisenhower Ave and Foggy Bottom today and there were no issues. A few of the trains were decently packed but only one or two were near regular rush hour level, as far as I could tell. I didn’t see a huge crowd of people waiting to board at DCA or anything.

Two things:
Pent up demand because people couldn't drive down for a few years, and although there were some crowds, plenty of people did stay home
Also, the weather was fucking perfect this afternoon. Just gorgeous outside.

My friend took the train from DCA and it took over two hours due to how packed the train was.

In addition to 395 itself being a literal parking lot. The entire ramp toward National was at a standstill due to idiocy as well. Total mess.

If only there was some sort of existing form of alternative transport... Maybe a rail type system you could park at and take into the city.
