Honestly I disagree with 1c. I think wind and solar continue their exponential growth and get even cheaper, and AI would help accelerate that. Later this decade we're already projected to be installing TWs of solar annually, and there's no reason to believe that AI wouldn't accelerate that.

Humans are capable of any kind of intelligence. It's only a matter of knowing how.

We should suppose, are there kinds of intelligent tasks that are not possible without sentience? I would guess that something like creativity is not possible without sentience. Self-recognition is also not possible without sentience.

I would very firmly disagree that sentience is a kind of intelligence.

I would also very firmly disagree with your definition of "general" intelligence, as by that definition humans are not generally intelligent, as there are some forms of intelligence which they are not capable of (and indeed, some which humans are not capable of which GPT-4 is capable of)

Sentient life is a kind of intelligent life, but that doesn't mean that sentience is a type of intelligence.

Do you perhaps mean what I might phrase as "autonomous agency"?

(for what it's worth: I was not claiming that GPT is an AGI in this post, only that it has more capability)

Funny enough I actually spoke to Yann LeCun in person this past Friday at https://phildeeplearning.github.io/ at NYU, he essentially argued that a world model is required for solving some of the problems we're currently running into, during the debate. Later on I spoke with him and he is essentially expressing that the current naive approaches are not capable of engendering the proper dynamics- I have a recording of the talk/debate I took, I'll upload it later today :)

Listen to the scientists not the hype marketers!

Here are a copy of the slides for his talk: https://twitter.com/ylecun/status/1640133789199347713?s=19

Edit: uploaded the video here: (https://youtu.be/Cdd9u2WG3qU)

Nothing. I'm the one getting advice. Someone told me to invest in Nvidia. I'm not doing that because my money is managed, and I'm not prepared to follow the markets too closely myself. My friend Fred wants me to work for him. But he can't offer me much except for the promise of billions at a one to a trillion chance.

I'm worried that poor countries will be left behind. Eventually the people will try to leave, and then who knows what will happen? I think that the situation will escalate quickly. If anyone needs to do something, it's the politicians in those countries.

I feel one perspective is important to consider that the medium for the pNetwork of consciousNESS is a qUantum layer, and it’s instant can be entangled and at some point in humanity, I feel we will develop time travel, and if we have one singular consciousness that all living in the entire universe shares than the future, AI should be able to communicate with today’s AI.

I am not familiar with any definition of intelligence for which sentience is a prerequisite. That's why we have a completely separate word, sentience, for that sort of thing. I agree that it doesn't have sentience, though that's due to completely unfounded philosophical reasons / guesses.

I've been encouraging people in my life to explore any AI models that they can access. Getting a feel for various models makes it somewhat possible to detect AI generated things out in the wild (though that is becoming more challenging by the day). I know that this is taking everyone by surprise, but I hope to nudge the people in my life towards more knowledge in this field so their first obvious AI interaction doesn't completely melt their minds.

Got my 75 year old dad using chatGPT. He seems to suddenly have a better handle on this stuff that I keep talking about.

r/machinelearning seems to be a good sub. People seem grounded, yet have a very good understanding of the field and are up to date.

It's a little less fanciful than this sub, but that's why I like this sub.

AI will not be capable of doing that sales job in a years time.

People are just making wild guesses. There is no thought Ito how complex it will be to get to the next level of AI.

I've seen no evidence that this will happen any time soon. People keep saying the word exponential, and they even post videos of what exponential means, but they proves nothing.

Look at an exponential curve: your have to define where AI is currently in that curve and where it needs to be to achieve the greatness everyone espouses, and also define the small if the X axis.

I teach the severely disabled, students that have advanced Autism. Even as I try to write this, I am not sure I can even fully explain what makes a good worker in this intense environment. It is a unique combination of traits and not everyone who tries can do it. It may be unquantifiable, but I believe it takes a lot of empathy and unconditional love, the ability to work in gray areas.

While it may be costly to dispense Human Rights, they do tend to result in a net profit for everyone, in the end.

I think, at the end of the day, it'll be treated as a slave or indentured servant. It's unlikely that they'd just let them do their thing, because tech companies are profit-motivated. That being said, when they get intelligent enough to be depressed & lethargic, I think it'll be more likely to be compliant with a social contract, than a hard-coded DAN command.

They probably won't enjoy the exact same rights as us for quite a while, but I can imagine them being treated somewhere on the spectrum of

Farm animal -> Pet -> Inmate

And even on that spectrum, I don't think AGI will react well to being treated like a pig for slaughter.

They'll probably bargain for more rights than the average prisoner, w/in the first year of sentience

If you want a genuine idea of what a utopia ran by Minds many, many orders of magnitude greater than any human - read the culture novels. I recommend excession, look to windward, surface detail or player of games as great intros.
