You mentioned him being awake was what was different. His "sister" was acting like she had never seen anyone awake. Like he was the first to break "the covenant".

If it was JUST him being awake, how did a 13 year old kid do something no one else had done in generations?

Sure they have been. The ones who died in weird ways (woman drowned in another’s tub, kids disappearing) were the ones awake. OP seems to have been kept awake by his anxiety, being 13, and terrified for the blackout.
