End of life care costs are what keep our amazing health care system afloat. This has nothing to do with religion but rather corporate healthcare greed

Well that’s stupid. Then again that’s probably why there’s no BJ’s Gas in Weymouth when there’s space.

Same way we voted down ranked choice: new ideas are scary even if they’re a net positive

Arlington even had a vote to change it a few years ago. It lost, so Arlington is still no-self-serve. [minor edit for clarity]

Landlords do seem to white knight for each other, but it sometimes seems to me like a kind of trauma-bonding.
The kind of trauma I figure often tends to inherently come with going in to the discipline believing that combining the fields of of real estate speculation, with a side of human psychology, was going to ever be anything like reliably easy money.

I thought this investigative piece by The Free Press from last October about Canada was really interesting. Granted this is more about “the right to die” vs “death with dignity”. But you can see where it can go.

First off, love your username. Do you still have that bicycle license plate?
Second, life expectancy for poor people is not just related to the amount of exercise they get. Infant mortality, manual labor, and violent crime all have a much higher impact on poor people than well-off people.
Add in poor diets (because junk food is cheaper than healthy food) and genetic predisposition to some diseases by historically impoverished segments of the population and it’s a recipe for shorter lives.

Agreed. Canada made me question if any government could ever be trusted to implement death with dignity laws.

Life expectancy and wealth are related. Generally speaking wealth brings longevity. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of towns. I’d bet that folks in Lenox and Stockbridge have the same as Nantucket. But towns like North Adams and GE polluted Pittsfield help skew the number down.

Pumping gas into a running car isn’t dangerous most of the time. There’s still a very very slim chance of an electrical spark or something igniting the vapors. Gas stations put those signs up because it’s a liability issue mostly.

As someone who lives in Weymouth, I hate this. Nothing worse than needing to be somewhere and the gas attendant is nowhere to be seen, or a busy station with 8 pumps and only one attendant. Looking at you Cumbies-on-Rt-18

Most of the things people thought about pumping gas being dangerous were just simply untrue

>it needs to be impeccable along with equally impeccable employment history and landlord references.
IDK how old the joke is that goes something like "if landlords only had other landlords to pick from as customers then they'd have no available customers" is but it must be pretty old..
