Newark itself has some of the best restaurants in the area for Spanish (*Mompou or ViVo tapas) Portuguese (Sol Mar, Iberia, *Adega Grill)or Brazilian ( *Delicias de Mina’s Steak House, Brazilia Grill). I placed an asterisk on my favorite spots, those are located in the Ironbound section of Newark a safe neighborhood know for its restaurant scene.

Go to the Ironbound if you want good food. Casa D'Paco and Vivo Tapas for Spanish cuisine, Boi Na Brasa and Brasilia for Brazilian BBQ are some of my first recommendations, but there are tons of other restaurants in the neighborhood. The Newark Museum of Art is very underrated. It's a great way to spend the day when the weather is bad. Also, if you're arriving in April, you might just arrive at the perfect time to see the cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park, which has the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the US. There's also a Japanese cultural festival and music on April 16.

I would have preferred a more traditional statue myself. But calling it "an example of a receding civilization" is the kind of hyperbole that makes people not take what you say seriously. There's always been mediocre art in all periods.

There’s really not much around the airport other than a mess of highways. You’ll need to Uber to Newark Penn station or rent a car. If you’ll be in Oradell, I would look for places in Bergen county and NYC. Terminal A in the airport is brand new and actually has a lot of food options if you need to kill time there.

For food places in Newark itself I have enjoyed Mercato pie and hobby’s deli. I just work in Newark though so I’ll leave it to others to mention their fave spots.

Excuse me, let me tell you something... When America opened up the floodgates and let all us Italians in, what do you think they were doing it for? 'Cause they were trying to save us from poverty? No, they did it because they needed us.
