Reply to comment by Crustybuttt in Roger Waters for the Pink Floyd album 'The Wall' is the greatest vocal performance of all time by slowlyun
I agree the band collectively are greater than the sum of their parts. Love all the 1967-1983 period. Once Roger left the Floyd albums became very watered down. Similar can be said of Roger's solo albums: without the rest of the band there is a particular magic missing.

It's a shame the Live8 gig didn't inspire a proper band reunion.

On Syd: he only really contributed to the debut album. Some fine dandy stuff, sure. Everything after that - up to Wish You Were Here - is a team effort by the rest. Roger, as we know, led the trio of albums between 1977-1983.

Putting aside your personal views on Roger's character, would you agree his vocals on The Wall studio album are quite extraordinary? You don't even have to personally like it, but objectively it's a hell of a performance!

On topic, Syd Barrett was the best thing Floyd ever had going for it. Dave Gilmour is second. Roger is own biggest fan, but it’s Gilmour and Richard Wright that made his songs come alive

It does, and it does. But the major executives at the radio stations and recording labels and concert promoters are all the age where they'd've been teens when these artists were in their heyday.
It's the Boomer problem all over again, except it's Gen X now that has the entrenched tastes. I am Gen X, and I know that I haven't kept up with music since 15 to 20 years ago, when Adele and Lady Gaga were making their first hits. I want to be more like my mom was, who listened to Top 40 right up until she lost her faculties in the mid 2000s, and liked Matchbox Twenty as much as she liked Chuck Berry as a teenager or Glenn Miller as a small child.

They totally blew it with pairing up the bands. G 'n' R should be the same night as AC/DC. Maiden and Ozzy, and a 3 hour Metallica show. No Tool. Their music has little in common with any of these other bands, and they are horribly out of place. At least they should have their own night

Motley Crue - Home Sweet Home ---- The music video made that song a hit. It would have been a widely panned, throw-away, waste of space if not for the MV.

Yeah I regret the tone of my comment, sorry. I really wasn't trying to be snibby/elitist but I struggled getting my point into words. I will try again
"Barbershop has not just morphed and become other styles of a Cappella music like Pentatonix, modern barbershop is still barbershop, and exists alongside those other styles. If you are thinking the only modern remnants of barbershop is other acapella like Pentatonix (who are amazing btw!), I'm not saying you're dumb ...I'm excited to say that means you must be missing out on barbership itself still existing as a genre in its own right with a lot of fantastic music and artistry to be enjoyed".

Pretty much everything on MTV in the early 80s. Tainted Love, She Blinded Me With Science, Take On Me, Whip It, Beat It, Madonna's entire catalog....particularly the new wave stuff would have never made any money if not for the videos. Like West End Girls. Has anyone ever listened to the 1st Pet Shop Boys album? It sounds like a poorly made demo. Drum machine, synth bass, vocal, and one keyboard that either plays chords or melodic lines, but never both, and never any overdubs. Very sparse. Very cheap. Most of this new wave stuff was garbage, but it sold because of the video
