Reply to Can a song be surf music if it doesn't mention the ocean, surfing, etc.? What makes surf music surf music? by GregJamesDahlen
I feel it was predated by the “exotica” genre and lounge music in some way. Chill instrumentals that have some pseudo interpretation of exotic caribbean and middle eastern music.
One thing that i think is interesting is that since it started as instrumental music, theres a lot of crazy examples from all over the world (vietnam, mexico, peru, middle east, etc) either as surf instrumentals or as an element of it (i.e. Cumbia Amazónica)

I listen to a lot of death metal so the vocals don't really factor in for me as much. For me, I think it's just the speed and technical prowess that moves me.

Canned Heat. Adolfo is the only member from the 60s, but he wasn't the original.
If you expand it to original members being alive, but having nothing to do with the band, the list gets a bit longer.

Hey, If you ever have kids, and one of them, when he's eight years old, accidentally sets fire to the living room rug... go easy on him.

I can do both. There are songs I like but hardly know all the words and meanings but then there are songs I really like where I’ll dissect them and theory craft and find similar relations to my own life for some songs. Music to me is more than just a vibe of sounds. Sometimes the sounds amplify the meaning behind the song and the message can be quite meaningful. There are a plethora of songs that have gotten me through hard times and some that motivate me and what not. An emotional connection that I feel you can’t fully achieve by just simple listening and liking a song just because it sounds good or has a nice beat.

Surf music isn't just about the waves, it's about the dunes and sand. Thus the arabic influence.

thoughts on why rolling bass lines and beach boys style harmonies say surf? Is it just because the early progenitors had those elements and they became linked to surf in general? or does something about those elements really make one think of the ocean?

I don't pay too much attention to the lyrics, at least not initially. Sometimes knowing the lyrics actually takes away from my enjoyment of a song.
