To get both a decent electric guitar and an amplifier for 200 bucks might be hard. Or will you be playing through some form of computer plugin?

I would try to find a second hand Squier or Ibanez, possibly Yamaha or Epiphone in your price range if you can put all the money towards just a guitar. Most electrics can cover most of the ground between really clean - really distorted in the end. Telecasters and Stratocasters get used in metal, SGs and Les Pauls in jazz and gospel.

If Squier, anything from the Vintage Modified or Classic Vibe series should be decent stuff.

I get what you're saying but I get really tired of the "then just don't listen to mainstream" argument.

Mainstream music media is literally the only way to reach any sort of real audience. It's the only way for artists to be seen or heard by a large enough group of people in order for a protest song to make an actual impact.

The fact that they refuse to ever deviate from the pop/rap formula is not only extremely harmful to music as an art medium (especially when it comes to historical preservation of songs) but also its detrimental to our culture as a whole because the once great medium for societal protest known as mainstream music is completely gone, at a time when we could really use it.

If it were as easy as just not listening that would be great but its so very much more complicated than that.

I mostly listen to rap music, and lyrics are basically the only part I care about. I actually don't even notice when there's beat switches or something unless it's pointed out to me.

If the lyrics aren't interesting or clever and sound good I'll almost certainly never listen to it again, even if the music itself sounds good. Obviously though if I'm listening to like EDM or something then the music is incredibly important haha.

The Music comes first, if it's not catchy enough musically to grab your attention the lyrics don't really matter because I wouldn't give it repeat attention.

There's songs that I've loved for years that I never really dissected the lyrics on until way later and realized what the meaning was.
