There are hundreds of stories out there of people who sign up with these companies then after the introductory rate period is over it automatically locks you into another year long contract at double the price because you ā€œforgot to cancelā€. They are basically walking scams and use people hate and lack of understanding to prey on people.

I stayed in healthcare. I have my own practice but don't deal with insurance companies anymore (except to beg for prior authorizations). That doesn't eliminate all the stressors but it makes everything simpler and more efficient.

The alternative was to work for hospitals and retire early but I'm not ready to retire yet.

Back in the day my students (criminal justice types heading for LE) would take the Academy's "100 hour" course so they could take OOB Police Dept seasonal jobs to patrol the beach for drunken Mass*** kids. And parents. And geezers. But no-one ever seemed to get very hurt.

This is the way.

Maine doesn't have huge regional volunteer organizations, Good Shepherd Food bank is one that I can think of off the top of my head, although thinking about it I'm not sure how many volunteers they have, because they work closely with volunteer food banks in towns. There is also the Dempsy center but I think that mostly located in the L/A area.

To OP: what type of volunteering would you like to do? That will help immensely to give you some direction. Smaller central Maine towns would have most volunteer opportunities centered around the town, where bigger towns/cities would have more diverse opportunities.

Sadly, I've done this for a few friends. The only way yo do it legally and right is to have your mother cremated, build a boat, and put her ashes in the boat. My wife works for a funeral home, running their crematorium, and it takes a LOT to reduce a person to ashes. Just placing your mother in a boat and setting it on fire would not generate enough heat, and what would be left would not be pleasant.

Check locally, but most states have no restrictions on the transportation or dispersal of human ashes...that's how its OK for folks to spread ashes in lakes, fields, woods et al. Once you have your mothers ashes, you should be fine putting them in a boat.

Not much drama. Held a trespasser at shotgun point totally naked after he missed 4 huge no trespass signs. Years ago. No drama since except my own.

I apparently had a free viewing available. They lived in the Boston area; his father had taken off. and his mother never followed up on having the cabin and playhouse delivered. tl;dr, they never developed or really used the land much, and when the author's father was facing cancer and they were scared of being wiped out with nursing home expenses, he signed it over to his daughters and they apparently sold it for a pleasant amount to cover both repairs to their parents' home and also expenses in their own lives.

One day I heard a big racket on the edge of my property. About 30 seconds later, a fox came running through the woods with a flock of crows on its heels. They kept going and I could hear them for the next 2 or 3 minutes.

No. That's why we live here.

Well, unless you count overloaded logging trucks driving on posted roads. That'll raise some dramatic hackles.
