If you went and had a conversation with the person then you'd know for sure. But right now you're doing nothing other than making assumptions.

And that’s why I live on the upper west side now. Paying the rent here is far less than paying for hotels.

Nobody made you take those jobs though lol. Trust me I live in Boston now. I appreciate that high income doesn’t mean wealthy. But you make a choice on career and location and spouse and house etc.

So no when we are in CT we will both be working from home but she will need to go back to her office out near Syracuse every so often which is why Milford is as far east as we would like to go.

Meriden to West Hartford is about 20 minutes but the train to NYC is 2 hours. Anything north of New Haven is good for WHTFD but sucks for NY. South is the opposite. I use to live in Orange CA and work in LA. It was horrible. 5 hours round trip and it was only about 40 miles away. Just turned down 2 jobs in NY paying in the 250k range. I'm too old for that headache. Good luck, it's a tough decision.

I am assuming this is some QAnon bullshit.
The signs point to it and I think everyone should be concerned about that.

The issue is the public schools have gone downhill. They have great magnet schools down there, but better public schools are available in other towns.

Unfortunately Stratford public schools have gone downhill academically. You can go to magnet schools of course, but you can get the same priced house in Shelton with better schools attached.

I recommend Trumbull over Fairfield though. Better taxes and just as good of schools.

I mean neither one is bad so they could both move around academically by a few points.
I grew up in Trumbull and our middle schools did the same thing. I went to Madison and sometimes Hillcrest was better and sometimes it wasn't.

No surprise here, BUT, this is a big but:
Car insurance rates: Our annual average rate is $1,553. In Florida, its $3,183, in Lousiana, $2,909, New York, $3,139. You could move to Maine and only pay $941. Source: Bankrate
Home insurance rates: Connecticut $1,244. Florida, $1,981. In tornado alley, Oklahoma, $3,659, The national average is $1,428 for a $250,000 dwelling. Source: Bankrate.
Flood insurance. Many Connecticut residents may be able to get by without flood insurance, but if you need it, we oddly have the second-highest rate in the nation at $1,469. This makes no sense, but.... source: Value Penguin.

You have to consider the hours you work and where in NYC you work. I’ve been doing the commute for over 20 yrs (mostly in the Bronx with a short stint in Manhattan) I leave around 5:30 and return 2-3pm . The trip is bearable but not without its frustrations. Taking the train to the Bronx doesn’t make sense time wise and even working in Manhattan would of required the shuttle, another train and a long walk, didn’t make sense time wise. What I’ve recommended to a few people is to stay in a local hotel and do the trip for the week and see if it’s something you want to do. FYI I’m in Milford a tad further.

Houses are worth what people will pay for them. If you think something is truly overpriced (I.e. it’s been sitting on the market for a while) you can always try to make a lower offer.

Also consider that on-call docs need to be able to find a parking space if they get called in. I work at Hartford Hospital, and we have spaces reserved for specific license plates to ensure that important staff can park.

Reply to Connecticut's Elder Care Reckoning by ctmirror
Gabby, thank you for putting this out there , elder care was a mess 20 yrs ago when I was a recreational therapist for a LTC facility, and I'm facing placing my dad in short term rehab this week, and it scares me. I am going back and forth from Yale New Haven and let me tell you, the care THERE is bordering horrendous.
The hospital is filthy, the 3 ppl in his room are not getting the care they deserve, in fact, it's bordering neglect and that's at Yale. No washing up, barely any pain control, they will not help him eat despite the broken arm, call bells are placed where he can't reach it, urine placed next to his food, same dirty foot print on the floor for 3 days ....I really could go on.
I expect less from the rehab and that's terrifying.

The bottom five towns make no sense at all. I can't imagine any way that living in Bridgeport or Hartford would somehow be better than being in Canaan.

That’s about supply and demand, not taxes. Miami real estate is insane and unaffordable for most, but taxes are low. What we need in CT is to start building more housing. Too many homes with 2+ acre lots and towns with no industry/commercial activity besides the local supermarket. We need smart development and infrastructure. Housing is unaffordable because we don’t have enough inventory in the areas where the jobs are located. Too many towns that will not approve more housing because “it will change the character”. That’s the whole point. The tiny NE town is unaffordable if nice or an economic backwater otherwise.

I had my son there for an appt and that parking garage was slammed. I agree with you in principle on the tyranny of cars, but I felt lucky to even find a spot, and the garage was so jammed and old that it all felt kind of scary.

Funny! When I was at Foran (early 2000s) it was considered worse than Law. I’m sure it shifts from time to time

I live in the next town over at my in-laws house. My wife and I just played "house" on Sunday wandering through Milford to feel it out for ourselves. Still trying to figure out where we want to settle. But we also enjoyed how Milford felt. We like the downtown feel of Milford but enjoy the lot spaces in Orange and Woodbridge more. Trumbull also has some nice spots.

Our sales tax is 10%. My property taxes were $2100 last year on a 2700sq ft house. Car registration was 320 last year for a midsize crossover suv.
