I used to go there too. My first hairdresser left for a different place, and then my second did too, so I figured something was up. They would not let the stylists raise their prices at all, despite the fact that $85 is far below what "curl experts" charge for a cut in Boston and other similar cities. There were other red flags but I don't want to give out identifying info.

The broker cuts and pastes generic and often inaccurate descriptions of apartments to Craigslist, shows up late to show apartments that don't actually meet the specifications of the potential renter, makes a bunch of broad assumptions about the character of the potential renter on the basis of often racist/classist ballyhoo, photocopies a picture ID and submits a simple CORI check, facilitates the printing and stapling of leases and other paperwork largely pulled from standardized templates, and tells you that they'll look into those questions and then stops returning your calls once they've found some poor hapless college students desperate enough to rent the rat trap. Yeah, pretty much no actual work!

Just wanted to thank you for this request - lots of people (me included) are constantly on the lookout for places like this, especially post-covid. If you ever want to plan something concrete, I’d be happy to meet up with you somewhere for low-stakes conversation, OP!

The broker advertises the apartment, shows the apartment, vets applicants, conducts background checks, facilitates paperwork, draws up the lease, and answers any questions that arise. Almost no work!

Scam: asking for money before you see the apartment.

Bullshit but actually happens: application fees and the fee of 1 month rent to a broker who does no work.

MIT and Harvard both have housing websites where open rooms are posted by roommates. Other than that, Craigslist is her best bet.

I'll add a "meh" review for Anita Kurl. I don't want to completely discourage people from trying, but I think it depends a lot on your texture and what cut/style type works for you. My haircut was just okay and my styling was terrible--definitely didn't do anything to adjust for the fact that my hair is pretty fine and gets weighed down easily. They might be better for 3C+ hair?

Definitely this!! Teo (the owner) is incredibly skilled with a range of textures. I like her salon more than other curly spots because her stylists have certifications in a range of curly cut methods--not just Deva, or just Ouidad, etc. etc. The quality and location are both reflected in the cost, but...if you have the money, it's way worth it.
