Great outcome but it boggles my mind the amount of resources put into “studies” and “research”. Like yea if you add a bus lane no shit it will run faster. That’s like saying “if you have less traffic, you can drive faster”. Imagine if the money spent doing these studies was just put towards construction of actual infrastructure.

I live there and have absolutely no idea what the fuck you are talking about. They are all still open. Even the biggest moaners like Fast Phil's and City Paint are still around. Season To Taste moved into a larger building with zero parking in a more expensive part of Cambridge.

And frankly, many of the businesses in this stretch of Mass Ave suck big time and despite living literal footsteps from them I refuse to patronize them because they offer awful products or services.

So, we were lucky enough to be in a position to buy about a dozen years back and snagged the top floor of a duplex that had just been converted to condos. On the whole, great experience. Value has doubled over the last decade (which seemed to mostly be in line with the rest of Cambridge). As others have pointed out, Cambridge has low tax rates and a tremendously attractive residential exemption.

Noise can be an issue in old houses but we've always just thought of it as a part of city-living and have (mostly) been lucky enough to have neighbors who feel the same way. Maintenance is certainly a thing but I honestly sort of dig being responsible for it and take a weird amount of early-onset-old-man-pride in fixing things myself (...when possible).

Only suggestion I might have would be to possibly prioritize a 3-unit HOA over a 2-unit HOA. If you're in a 2-unit situation, you're sort of stuck really just hoping that the other unit-owner is going to be a thoughtful, reasonable neighbor. If you've got a third in the mix, chances are at least one of the two will be solid citizens. We've mostly been very lucky with the folks comprising the other half of our HOA (our current neighbors are swell) but there was a short period of time during which we were paired up with another owner who had severe struggles with mental health and that occasionally made our home life a little less than comfortable.

Not historical window specific, but my home has some very unique window shapes and banner glass was able to replace some custom panes that I thought would be impossible to do. If you cant get a historical specialist, or if you get sticker shock, give them a try

good luck. I had a similar issue. The dispute did not work, and they told me "i can submit another dispute if I disagree". When I got the letter in the mail, the "dispute" was that I can sue the city if I pay 300$ for the privilege . Reach out to city council and complain and see if they can help out because it's crazy if you have photo proof that parking will still tell you to pound sand
