First of all, if you don’t live here, why do you care?

Cambridge does not have a lot of crime - in general the crime rate is much lower than other urban areas. The Boston area has a fantastic job market for many industries and specialties. Yes it’s warmer elsewhere, but some people prefer the varied seasons and don’t love the heat.

A lot of people despise the idea of living in a suburban mcmansion and needing to drive everywhere. Everyone in Cambridge knows they could get a bigger home moving elsewhere - they value the walkability, diversity, proximity to industry and schools and cultural centers like museums, the culture, the public transit, etc.

MA has some of the best hospitals in the country. We also have some of the best public schools in the country.

Some people don’t like the Southern hospitality facade of niceties that often doesn’t translate to a deeper friendliness or good character. Some people also value living in states with leadership and laws that support them, support the LGBT community, support women’s healthcare, and aren’t trying to do things like ban books from schools.

Also, a big reason southern states have fewer homeless people is because their conservative leadership literally bus homeless people to other states to avoid responsibility. which is a pretty shitty and immoral way to handle the situation.

Seems like the many things that make Cambridge and Boston appealing to so many people are things you don’t care about. that’s fine. The things you value in life and where you want to live are probably places many people would find a living nightmare.

Why do people live anywhere in the US? Typically because either (1) they have some family roots there or (2) there's significant economic/job opportunities.

Those other regions specialize in different economic sectors than greater Boston or specifically Cambridge. There's not much economic value to create in data science in Florida or bio-tech/pharma in much of Tejas.

I also feel that Cambridge is a bit overhyped. Used to live in Malden and I felt it was a better fit for me, but sounds like most people love Cambridge.

Also - yes, there are a lot of homeless people around here, unfortunately. The crime, though? I'm not aware of it...there were a lot of hecklers in the streets when I just moved few years ago and that was annoying, but I don't feel particularly scared to walk the streets late at night.

I liked the PCP’s I’ve seen there, but for mental health services I really struggled. I saw 2 different psychiatrists and the first prescribed an antidepressant after I told her about a very negative and dark reactions to a few I had before. I refused to take it, and felt like she was annoyed with me. The second wasn’t much better. (maybe this is me being stubborn, but I was seeing them regarding an attention deficit problem).

When it came to billing, they sent a $600 bill and told me my in network insurance “fell off” their system. As in, it was never sent to the insurance and they didn’t even call or message to let me know? I’m glad I called and got it straightened out, but that was annoying.

Overall they’re very meh to me. I don’t bother to go elsewhere though because I’m a transplant and will likely leave the area before it becomes a bigger problem.

My insurance specifically stated that the doctor was covered but I had no way of knowing beforehand that CHA was a different 'chargable' entity. I guess from now on I need to ask if the location any doctor practices in is included in their services. Completely ridiculous if you ask me.
