I lived in north Cambridge near Davis for a while and I never had to park more than a block away, except for the snowy season.

People need to learn how to pay attention while driving.

Reply to How do public schools enrolments work? I just relocated here and I have a 4.5 yo (born June 2018). I’m confused by the Pre-K, K, elementary system works. Can anyone give me some advice on where to get the best explanation or explain it to me? by Ok-Ferret-1990
Thankfully, you’re just in time! Lottery for JK/K placement ends at the end of the month, and after that you just get placed where there is space. Info is on the sites provided here.
Also, welcome to Cambridge! Feel free to DM me if you want to meet up at a playground with the kids! (I also have a 4.5 year old)

When I first moved here there were 5 Indian restaurants in Central. Maybe 6 actually. All had lunch buffets every day and all were mostly empty every day. There is no way that food was reheated every day over and over.

Cambridge and Somerville have very different systems, so a mixed group like that would be confusing.

How fast do you think you need to go to do some serious damage?

I would suggest that you consider getting rid of your car and using public transportation, Lyft, and Zipcar. You can save a lot of money and hassle.

I also found it all pretty confusing. Check out this ‘How the JKK lottery works’ was hidden on the waitlist/transfer faqs https://cdn5-ss5.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Server_3042785/File/departments/administration/frc/How_JKK_Lottery_Works.pdf

Not the best design, admittedly. But why would you ever be in danger of driving in the bike lane?

Most of the info is here https://www.cpsd.us/departments/src/registering_for/january_kindergarten_lottery
There are several schools, and a lottery system. You pick your top 3, enrollment is this month, so don’t wait to enroll. Schools offer tours by appointment if you want to see them.
4.5 is on the line for age. If they were born before Aug 31, 2018 they would be enrolling in Kindergarten, and if they were born later in 2018 it would be Junior Kindergarten.

Yes, this is the best starting point. It looks like the Family Resource Center has been rebranded the Student Registration Center. They are a great source of information and will point you in the right direction. Though well meaning, many Cambridge parents do not fully understand the system or recent changes to school placement. Take all social media advice with a grain of salt.

Street parking is pretty much everywhere in Cambridge. The resident sticker plus a guest pass is also incredibly affordable ~$25 a year.

Honestly, if you’re on Facebook joint Parents of Camberville and either Dads of Camberville or the correct Moms of Camberville cohort (I believe you’d be 4.0). With a June 2018 kid, you’d be looking at K but for all the details, these groups should serve you well.

I’ve lived between Kendall & Inman for a few years now. Never have had any issue at all with permit parking, even during snow or street cleaning. It’s way less of a headache than I anticipated

I've ordered from Desi Dhaba once when I had just moved to Cambridge and didn't know any places (winter 2019) and it was decently good - especially their naan which most places don't do well. But when I first saw it in person, empty on a Saturday night, that was concerning to say the least.

The folks who live nearby are gonna miss the ear shattering screech of the steel wheels from the trolleys making that hairpin turn at the terminus.

We went on a walk there this weekend and I saw a confused car turn right into the bike lane instead of the road which the caused 3 cars to follow them and then there was a line of 4 cars driving in the Brattle bike lane. 3 of them panicked and exited at the first break in the blocks but the first car just kept driving down the bike lane as if they didn't notice anything wrong. I know they look a little ugly but I think the cement blocks should have the taller toblerone blocks installed on top to make them more visible in the snow and safe for the cyclists. A lost driver also might hesitate to turn into the bike lane if it's so obviously walled off
