I got burned by one of those bastards as a child in the late 80’s.

I would not throw that blanket on the whole brand, but you can knowingly buy anything cast iron sans fear. Their other stuff is likely made by someone else with their logo and may or may not be a BIFL item.

Sure, but for 3x the price? I'm not sure if it's worth it. Anyone have other BIFL Dutch ovens?

Some outlets have the French stuff. At my outlet all the cookware is French and the accessories and small decor items are Chinese. 🍀🙏🏼

Honestly it sounds like operator error, some brands are fantastic and BIFL, but just not suitable for everyone’s use case and habits. All Clad is similar quality, but you might find a little more approachable due to the care differences

Le Creuset is awesome. I live near an outlet and have had no problem and things made decades ago and today are holding up the same.

Popsockets brand are really strong for this type of item. Given the abuse and wear they take they last well. I’ve tried two others and they don’t hold up. Given you’re trusting an expensive lifeline item to it, worth the extra dollars to get the real one.

It is if it is made in France! They make lower quality stuff in China for outlet malls etc.

Not strictly solo I suppose, more just lack of help from outside sources. First few like what I was talking about above that jump to mind are these 2. video from Deadmen, video from Jon Conti
Some terrific examples that are hardly ever accidentally unprepared. The most obvious, Les Stroud. He’s got the full Survivorman Seasons 1-5, as well as most of the spin-offs they did with it (Survivorman for Kids, Survivorman & Son, etc) Alone Across the Arctic. Dude paddles (spoiler alert: it’s mostly pushing, rather than paddling) across Canada’s Arctic in one season. Really puts into perspective how much extra weight being properly prepared adds, and he gets resupplied a few times over the few months.

With insufficient clearance it is my understanding that you break the old rod as you remove it and install a new segmented rod like this one... https://www.lowes.com/pd/Blue-Lightning-Rod-Original3-4-in-Hex-Plug-Aluminum-Zinc/5001418315?cm_mmc=shp--c--prd--plb--ggl--LIA_PLB_209_Water-Heaters--5001418315--local--0-_-0

Don’t those things give off some nasty toxic pollutants when used in an enclosed space? Some things should be trash. Asbestos is bifl but that’s not a good thing…

That's a solid point. I consider BIFL more of such a well made product that you shouldn't need to use the warranty, but I definitely see where you're coming from you're not getting those warranties on Walmarts cookware

You are the best source of this as I could recommend a juggernaut of stuff that would deliver the People's Elbow to your budget (which you have not stated) and confuse and beguile you as to their functions (which you have not stated).
You want a Duck Press Grand Hôtel for $14,000.
You want a Le Creuset Tagine as you are a Moroccan household.
See how this plays out? Be specific and/or use the search engine as it works great.

Your question lacks depth as Le Crueset makes about 789 things for the kitchen, each with a unique lifespan which really depends on the end user. Every enamel product on the planet can and will chip depending on the end user and/or latent defects, with Le Crueset likely being better than what you'd find at Walmart. BIFL is not about things that will last a literal 1000 years as every product fails, but Le Crueset is generally regarded as top tier for cast iron stuff. As to their 641 other things...not so much.

They have a lifetime guarantee but accidental damage is not covered by this.
Whether that means you consider Le Crueset are bifl depends on your definition of the term.
For me, they are bifl.

Do whatever you want, OP. There's nothing wrong with cleaning this up with a fresh coat of paint. I'm guessing the inside looks as dirty as the outside, and personally I wouldn't store my tools in something that dirty when I could just as easily clean it up. Also, it does appear that there's rust starting to creep in at the seams. Better to nip that in the bud before it spreads.

I think a lot of people said it earlier but these are just at the beginning of their journey. The reason we invest more in high quality footwear is that most cobblers can put a new sole on them and with the right conditioning, that leather will bounce back to life in no time!
