Bought a LL bean backpack before I went back to school at 46 to become a nurse. This was before the rescinded their lifetime guarantee. After nursing school I called to see if they could fix the torn lining between compartments or replace, and they refused. Said they don’t have that guarantee now so will not honor the one they had when i purchased it.

I say this because I wish I would have gotten a Jansport backpack and hope they never rescind their BIFL guarantee.

Patagonia makes a good hemp blend and Tentree has some nice stuff too (they also have organic cotton of good quality), but mostly you just have to hunt for them. I tend to thrift mine so they often don't have tags, but another common place to find them is little hippie clothing shops and fair-trade type stores. Hemp in particular is very durable and what jeans often used to be made out of!

If you are looking for the most ecologically sound - avoid bamboo. And read up on it. The process is not very friendly and bamboo plantations are not either currently. Bamboo fabric is a type of "viscose rayon" which is made by dissolving the cellulose in the bamboo and then extruding it. I'd avoid anything rayon or viscose if that is your goal in fact, including modal. Tencel Lyocell is the best of this family since it uses much safer and recyclable solvents.

In most case if you want shoes to work with, you end up with boots. A good pair will go over your budget, and they will probably not be breathable as you mean it, but people typically wear them for hours on end and never complain. Also a good pair will probably last a lot longer than just a year unless you work in the most demanding environment, in which case a tough pair of boots was a good idea to begin with anyway.

You can look at the channel Rose Anvil on YouTube. Most vids are random boots and shoes being reviewed which won’t help much if you don’t know what you want, but there are a few rankings as well which could give you ideas. https://youtube.com/@RoseAnvil

Absolutely. That would definitely do the trick provided the fan is forcing air through the canister (and not around it), the carbon blend is good for VOC adsorption, and a sufficient dwell time is achieved. Many of the grow filters on the market are great for this. There are also specialty purifiers with large carbon canisters as well (on the order of 20-50 pounds), some of which have oxidizers added as well to cover certain pollutants that carbon alone cannot remove. (I am a bit of an air purifier geek.)

Seven years ago I was looking for something BIFL. I looked at crystal, I had used metal before.

I bought a 144 box of Medline Emery boards for $6 and I still have half a box. (And I habitually file my nails.) Very happy with their performance also.
